Pale fingers passed over the candle and the wick lit with a purely white flame that danced about even though there was no draft in the church. Her footsteps echoed dully as she walked past pew after pew, her destination being the altar at the front of the sanctuary. It was dark outside and inside, the candle being the only source of light in the church. She was the only being inside the church at the moment and the silence nearly overwhelmed her. She knelt in front of the altar and placed the candle on the floor. She clasped her hands and bowed her head, hair hanging down but not burning if it touched the flame. Her lips moved in silent prayer and when she sat up again, the flame had become a pale gold color. Accompanied by the sound of softly rustling wings, two female figures appeared on either side of the kneeling girl.
"Sister," greeted the one to her left. "The Trinity is complete. Is this why you have called us here or is there a deeper reason?"
"Grave news, Lily," said the kneeling girl. "I have very grave news indeed."
She rose to her feet and turned to face the other two girls. She folded her hands and dropped them in front of her solemnly. The candle's light became brighter and she was silhouetted by it so that her features were indistinguishable. Something else was silhouetted by the candlelight, something that hadn't been seen before: wings. Two large, beautiful, feathery wings stretched from the back of her shoulder blades.
"Noel, patience is not my virtue," said the one on the right. "Would you be so kind as to tell us your 'grave news' instead of telling us you have it?"
"The Mackenzie brothers are discovering their gifts," Noel said quietly. "Crypto, Lily, surely you know what this means."
"It's beginning," whispered Crypto. "What are we going to do?"
"We're going to bring them here," Noel said. "Bring them here so that we can keep an eye on their progress. I'm afraid it might not be as easy as we would hope. Remember that their blood is tainted in two ways—they are not human any longer, though they believe themselves to be human."
"Their powers will begin to confuse them," Lily predicted. "They'll listen to us then."
"They might think us blasphemous at first," Crypto said.
"Well," said Noel softly. "It would be ironic for them to call angels blasphemous. We should go. Nothing more can be done tonight. Their feet are already on the path that will lead them to this church, and to us."
"Good," sighed Lily.
"We will meet again when the moon is full," said Crypto.
The sound of gently rustling wings filled the air again. Noel was left alone once more. She turned and murmured something in Latin. The flame of the candle turned black, flared up, and then vanished altogether. The church was plunged into darkness once more and Noel began to walk away. She glanced over her shoulder before closing the front doors. Whispers began to fill the empty pews. They all seemed to agree on one thing: the war was just about to begin.
